My teeth are amazing…

patient testimonial leicester clinic

Highly recommendable dentist. I joined the practice in May, I was looking around for a dentist who could do cosmetic work for a while.

This place is nice and clean and staff were always friendly, I really felt taken care of.
I knew I wanted veneers, I thought I needed them on all my teeth but I have just had the top front 4 done.

Before I had them the dentist had some models made up to check that veneers would work for me and so I could see what they looked like. Fortunately, I loved them! And love them even more now their in and I’m smiling from ear to ear. I had my teeth bleached first and then the dentist got the lab man in to do a specialist colour match and my veneers look amazing and so natural.

They have a membership plan which I joined as I saved 15% on my treatment and I spread the cost over all the appointments.

I can’t recommend these guys enough. Thank you!!!

That dental feeling of clean just got better…

AirFlow tooth cleaning

There have been many revolutions over the past decade but one of our absolute favourites has to be AirFlow tooth polishing. AirFlow polishing is an electrical machine that cleans and polishes the teeth with a mixture of water, compressed air and fine powder particles.

AirFlow polishing offers superior stain removal compared to traditional polishing methods. A powerful jet of water, air and fine powder polishes all the surfaces of a tooth, removing plaque, discolouration and soft deposits, it reaches into the difficult to clean interproximal (in-between) areas which tend to attract more plaque and staining.

The result of using the AirFlow polisher to remove excess staining helps teeth to looks shades whiter and ultimately make the whole mouth feel much healthier.

We combine traditional cleaning methods by removing the hard plaque deposits (calculus) with hand and ultrasonic scalers, then polish the teeth the traditional way with a brush and polish; finally, we finish with the AirFlow polisher. The AirFlow polisher and its microparticles help to lift any remaining plaque and staining for that deep down feeling of clean.

The advantages don’t stop there! The AirFlow polisher is extremely efficient in removing the biofilm that sits around the teeth and gums. The damaging biofilm develops when dental plaque is colonised by bacteria and can lead to gum disease. Breaking that biofilm is the finishing touch in our most advanced cleaning system.

If you love that dentist feeling of clean you really will love AirFlow tooth polishing. Click here to arrange your appointment today…

Is it time us Brits straightened up?

cosmetic braces to straighten teeth

In an episode of the Simpsons, a dentist tries to persuade a young patient (Ralph) into taking better care of his teeth by showing him ‘The Big Book of British Smiles’! Whilst the old American stock joke may have held some truth in a bygone era it certainly isn’t true anymore.

Spending on cosmetic dental treatments is certainly on the increase with spending reaching £1.86bn last year in the UK, according to market research group Mintel.

Celebrities have played a big role in the increase of smile makeovers. We only have to look at the culture of shows such as the X-factor, transforming people into superstars would not be complete without the customary smile makeover.

The favoured choice for improving one’s smile was once veneers but this was deemed by most dentists a little too destructive of otherwise healthy teeth and was financially out of reach for most.

Nowadays if people want to transform their smiles they (and dentists) would prefer to go down a more conservative route and keep their teeth as natural as possible. That’s why we absolutely love the latest advancement in tooth alignment technology – cosmetic braces.

A great smile doesn’t have to be absolute perfection but it does require 3 essential components –

• Healthy
• Straight
• Bright

The benefits of straight teeth aren’t just that your smile will look great. A key benefit to straight teeth is that they are much easier to clean. Straight teeth will help to reduce your risk in developing gum disease often caused by difficulty cleaning due to misaligned teeth.

The type of cosmetic braces we use are strictly for adults. They work by aligning only the teeth visible in your smile.

The cosmetic brace systems we use are:

Fast– You will have straight teeth in about four to nine months with the average treatment time of six months
Discreet– the wires and brackets are white and clear
Affordable– the short treatment time dramatically cuts the cost

Many adults are now realising that fixing their uneven smile is quite straightforward and actually improves the overall health of the mouth. They can have a cosmetically pleasing brace for a short period of time and at half of the cost of conventional orthodontics.

BONUS! We also offer complimentary tooth whitening with all of our cosmetic brace treatments at our Leicester clinic. So you can have straight, healthy and white teeth.

Tooth Whitening Facts…

teeth bleaching

It is not without reason that we call our teeth pearly whites. A bright smile is always deemed more attractive over teeth that are stained yellow or brown. There are a variety of products and procedures available on the market to improve the looks of your smile. But before you decide, you need to get some facts straight.

1. Whitening is safe

If carried out by a trained dental professional, tooth whitening is perfectly safe. Based on our knowledge of your oral health we will discuss with you the options available, decide if tooth whitening is appropriate for you and develop an overall treatment plan that gives the desired result.

2. Only trained dental professionals can whiten teeth

It is illegal for anyone other than dentists or their team to carry out tooth whitening. Anyone else offering tooth whitening (e.g. beauticians, hairdressers and salon staff) won’t have the right training and knowledge. It could permanently damage your teeth and gums and they can’t help you if something goes wrong.

3. The preferred option

Tooth whitening does not remove the surface of your teeth or change their shape. It’s often the better option than alternatives, such as veneers or crowns, because it doesn’t involve permanently altering the tooth structure.

4. Selecting the right product for you

We are trained to know what whitening products will be safe for your teeth and gums. Products provided by non-dentist often do not have enough safety data and evidence to support their use; this can result in burned gums and/or blistered lips or even more serious consequences. Using products that are not appropriate for you will produce poor results.

5. How it works

A carefully controlled concentration of tooth whitening gel is applied to your teeth using specially-made trays that fit in your mouth. We will be able to discuss with you the level of whitening you want and give you an idea of how long the treatment should be carried out to achieve the shade you’re after.

6. What to expect during treatment

You may experience some sensitivity for a short time during your treatment but this is normal and will soon fade away after completion.

7. Over the counter, kits may not be safe

The products you can buy online or from high street shops often fail to declare the precise chemicals used so it’s very difficult to assess their safety. Because of this, they should not be considered safe. These products won’t produce the same good results you can expect by visiting us.

Adult braces explained- it’s easier than you think…

Woman smiling with nice straight teeth

Many people are not happy with how their front teeth look when they smile and it can affect many areas of their life. Most adults are put off wearing braces because they don’t want the metal ‘train tracks’ for a couple of years.

However, with modern advances in orthodontics, there are now many options to straighten your teeth. Cosmetic brace systems such as Clear Smile Brace or Six Month Smiles are a rapid and cosmetic orthodontic system that focuses mainly on correcting the front 10 teeth.

The speed and cosmetically pleasing appearance of these brace systems means it can be an appealing option to give you a great straighter smile and more quickly than conventional brace systems.

Treatment generally takes between 4- 9 months with an average treatment time of around 6 months.

The easy steps…

Free Cosmetic Consultation

The first step is to come and see us at Smile Essential for a free cosmetic consultation. At your dental appointment, the dentist will take a full history and listen to how you would like to change your smile.
You and the dentist can then plan out your goals of the treatment and result you would want to achieve. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have at this stage. The dentist will check your suitability for cosmetic braces and if suitable recommend you return for a full orthodontic assessment.

Full Orthodontic Consultation

A series of records need to be taken including photos, x-rays and impressions of your teeth. This will enable the dentist to provide you with a virtual set-up of the teeth and how they will look after the treatment. A full treatment plan will be provided along with likely timescales, fees and finance options.

Braces Fitting Appointment

Once you have consented and are happy with the treatment the dentist can get you started on your journey to new straighter teeth. The dentist will begin to bond the brackets to your teeth using a special adhesive. Then hi-tech flexible archwires are attached to the brackets. These wires will generate gentle forces that will start to gradually move your teeth into position.

Full instructions on brace care, diet and oral hygiene will be given. You will be able to ask any questions you have. Then you will book your first adjustment appointment usually about four weeks later.

Brace Adjustment Appointments

The adjustment appointments are usually around 30 minutes every 4 weeks until your teeth are fully aligned. At these appointments, space is created to allow movement and the archwires are replaced to generate appropriate tooth movements.

Once you are happy with the results, impressions are taken to create a custom retainer.

Braces Removal

This is an exciting appointment- the BIG reveal! Your braces are quickly and gently removed with a specially designed instrument. Your teeth are then cleaned and polished to leave a smooth surface. Your retainers are also fitted at this appointment to prevent your teeth from relapsing. Photos and final impressions are taken to record the final result. Full aftercare instructions are given and a retainer review appointment is scheduled. The whole appointment takes about an hour.

You’ll now be able to enjoy your wonderful new smile!

At the moment we are offering free tooth whitening with all cosmetic brace systems. To find out about booking an appointment click here.

AirFlow teeth polishing offers superior cleaning…

teeth stain removal

We all love that dentist feeling of clean and now that feeling has got even better thanks to a revolution in dental technology. The innovative AirFlow polishing is an electrical machine that cleans and polishes the teeth with a mixture of water, compressed air and fine powder particles.

This method is superior to traditional polishing methods.

At Smile Essential we use a combination periodontal cleaning treatment. Firstly, we remove the hard plaque deposits called calculus with hand and ultrasonic scalers, then polish teeth the traditional way with a brush and polish; finally, we finish with the AirFlow polisher. The AirFlow polisher and it’s microparticles help to lift any remaining plaque and staining.

An added advantage to the AirFlow polisher is its efficiency in removing the biofilm that sits around the teeth and gums. The damaging biofilm develops when dental plaque is colonised by bacteria and can lead to gum disease. Breaking that biofilm is the finishing touch in our most advanced cleaning system.

The AirFlow polishing system is more comfortable than traditional methods of stain removal. If you suffer like so many of our patients with sensitivity especially whilst cleaning then you’ll love the air flow polisher. The polisher doesn’t have direct contact with the teeth, so it doesn’t make a squeaky noise nor does it vibrate. In fact, the experience is quite pleasant. The air polishing powders come in a variety of flavours, our favourites are lemon and spearmint.

ClearSmile Braces Revolutionising Orthodontics…

quick orthodontic treatment in Leicester

Many people are unhappy with the way their front teeth look and in an era when your photo is being taken more and more it can highlight the problem and increase your anxiety surrounding your teeth and smiling.

If your teeth are misaligned it can seem a pretty daunting task to look at your options. Just 10 years ago options were limited to correcting wonky or uneven teeth by using conventional orthodontics or more drastic cosmetic dental procedures or learning to live with them.

Traditional orthodontics can be very off-putting due to their appearance, time involved and the cost. It’s something that people wish they had done when they were a kid.

That was until Anterior Alignment Orthodontics. Anterior (Anterior means nearer the front) Alignment Orthodontics such as ClearSmile Brace is revolutionising the way people straighten their teeth. Focusing on generally moving the front 10 teeth that are visible when you smile it dramatically reduces the treatment time and the cost involved.

ClearSmile Brace uses clear brackets fixed to the teeth and the wires are covered with a white material, so they are much less visible than traditional metal train track braces.

ClearSmile Brace wires use shape-memory technology meaning they will return to their original shape regardless of how they are bent. This creates gentle forces to move your teeth to the desired position.

Once the orthodontic treatment is completed we use a dual retention system to ensure your teeth stay straight for the rest of your life.

There are many benefits to straighter teeth, of course, the fact they are in better alignment will undoubtedly improve the appearance of your smile. But straighter teeth are also much easier to take care of. If your teeth cross over it is more likely that you will have difficult to reach places which accumulate plaque and in turn, means you are more susceptible to decay or gum disease.

7 Secrets Dental Professionals Know That Stop Teeth From Staining…

dentists leicester

If teeth staining is the bane of your life, then you might want to take a read of these tip top tips from the dental professionals at Smile Essential Dental Practice in Leicester.

Staining is a common complaint we hear at or dental clinic and one that we (with a little help of our dental gadgets) can solve easily. But there are lots of things (well at least 7!) that you can do to help prevent teeth from staining.

We’ll start with the obvious…

1) Lifestyle

Habits such as smoking and drinking copious amounts of red wine might seem rock and roll but they will ultimately lead to brown stained teeth. So stop smoking and limit the red wine to the occasional treat with a meal.

Some of our other leisurely past times aren’t off the hook either- tea and coffee also cause staining so limit yourself to a couple a day and rinse with water after if your able to.

Not so obvious is green tea, healthy as it may be! Green tea can cause some serious staining so follow the advice above or switch to white tea- all the goodness of green tea but with a smaller amount of staining.

2) Mouthwash

This one might surprise you, it certainly does a lot of our Leicester dental patients. Chlorhexidine Gluconate can be an ingredient in mouthwashes- especially the ones used for gum problems. A side effect of this chemical is teeth staining.

It does work well to help treat gum disease but generally this needs to be done in conjunction with dental hygiene appointments and tailored advice from your dentist or dental hygienist.

If you’re using a mouthwash that does contain Chlorhexidine Gluconate then you can limit the side effects of staining by avoiding eating or drinking for at least an hour after its use.

Mouthwashes such as Listerine, Plaques and Dental PH tend to be better for everyday use and can aid a good mouth cleaning routine.

3) Crooked or crowded teeth

When the teeth overlap one another it can be difficult to clean effectively. Having straighter teeth means that your mouth will be easier to clean and staining won’t build up in those hard reach areas.

Treatments to make teeth straighter are so much easier nowadays. The braces are cosmetically more attractive, treatment can be done relatively quickly and treatment is more affordable than it used to be.

4) Sonic technology

Some electric toothbrushes use sonic technology- this is great for removing staining that builds up on a daily basis. Sonic technology provides a much deeper clean meaning you get that dental feeling clean every time.

The sonic technology used in these electric toothbrushes is similar to that which we use in the dental practice to remove staining and plaque build up.

5) Medication

If some medications used during pregnancy or childhood can affect the teeth and when adult teeth start to develop during growth it can cause quite noticeable staining. The well known being tetracycline staining- this is more complicated to treat but cosmetic dentistry can help.

When treating tetracycline staining it’s important to seek the advice of a dental professional.

6) Porous surfaces

Ever noticed that staining seems to build up more around the gum line or in areas where there is a hard plaque build up? Plaque has a more porous surface meaning that it’s much easier for staining to attach itself in those areas.

Having your teeth cleaned regularly will help to get rid of any plaque build up and staining. Your dental health professional will also be able to give you some dental advice to help improve the situation.

7) Whitening toothpastes

The outside of the tooth structure is made up of enamel- it’s enamel that’s smooth and white. Under the enamel surface is the dentine- dentine is more yellow and porous.

This becomes a bit of a problem with some whitening toothpastes, as they can be very abrasive so they may remove some surface staining but it can also remove some of the enamel surface revealing the more yellow dentine and making teeth appear generally darker.

If you would like the overall appearance of your teeth to be whiter the best way to achieve a whiter smile is professional tooth whitening from a registered dental professional.
