Good Dental Health at Local School

dental team school visit braunstone

It’s well publicised that Leicester has the highest dental decay rate of children in England. So we at Smile Essential Dental Practice take part in various activities across Leicester to help educate others in the importance of dental care. Our most recent trip out in the community was to help educate the young children aged around 5 in good dental health. The photos above show Claire and Emilia visiting a local Braunstone Primary school.

This was Smile Essentials second visit to the school and the children seemed to really enjoy themselves, partaking in activities to increase their awareness on the importance of brushing and limiting sugary foods/drinks.

figures on childrens dental health in leicesterFive year old children living in Leicester have the highest experience of dental decay observed in England.

The 2012 results show an increase in the proportion of children with dental decay in
Leicester from 48.7% in 2008 to 53.2% in 2012, equating to a percentage point
increase of 4.5%.
• At age 5, children normally have 20 primary teeth. On average, 5 year old children in
Leicester had just under 4 teeth (3.88) that were decayed, missing or filled.
• The average number of decayed, missing or filled teeth in the whole sample taken in
Leicester (including the 46.8% who were decay free) was 2.06. This was more than
double the national rate of 0.94.

There is a strategy now in place in Leicester with the NHS and Leicester City Council. The aim of the strategy is to support coordinated activity across Leicester City to improve oral health, reduce oral health inequalities and lay solid foundations for good oral health throughout life.

Their objectives are:

• Optimising exposure to fluoride
• Gain multi-partnership support in order for everyone to play a role in improving oral health
• Improve preventive and routine dental attendance
• Improve parental skills on caring for children’s oral health

How you can help?

• Ensure that your child brushes 2x a day with a fluoride toothpaste
• Limit or eliminate the amount of sugary foods and drinks your child consumes
• Regularly attend for your dental care and treatment/prevention appointments
• Improve your child’s understanding of the importance of having healthy teeth and gums.

How clean is your dentists loo?

Dentist loo leicester

Choosing a dental practice can be tricky, what should you look for? There are so many things to consider nowadays whether you are looking for cosmetic work, you’re nervous or just want somewhere decent to take the kids. With recent press coverage of a local dentist and his hygiene procedures this is now another consideration for you to think about when choosing a new dentist.

What sort of safety considerations and questions should you look for:

  1. What are their decontamination and sterilisation procedures?
  2. Are all of the staff registered with the General Dental Council?
  3. Does it look a clean, fresh and friendly environment?
  4. What are other people saying about them?
  5. How clean is their loo?

How clean is their loo?

This can sound like a daft question but, how often will you judge a cafe, bar or any public place by the state of their loo? In truth you might feel a little uncomfortable asking to see your dentist decontamination procedures but asking to nip to their loo is easy.

Smile Essential’s Decontamination Key Points:

  • Use single use (disposable) dental items when possible (gloves, needles etc)
  • Surfaces disinfected with a specialised solution between patients.
  • Dental instruments are cleaned and processed away from the dental room in a special decontamination room.
  • Sterilisation of instruments using a dental autoclave
  • Items and dental instruments are stored in sealed in pouch envelopes designed for dentistry where possible or where not in a sealed container.
  • All dental staff undergo significant decontamination training and continual development.
  • Regular testing and maintenance of dental equipment and appliances.

As you can see there is a lot more to do then just washing your hands and cleaning a few instruments.

Smile Essential Dental Practice: Walk on the Wildside

Bradgate Stream

I should imagine that every Leicestershire person at some point in their life has a fond memory of Bradgate Park. Whether it’s a Sunday stroll after dinner or paddling in the River with fishing net in hand as a child on a summers day. This is a place to make life’s treasured memories and enjoy quality family time. With this in mind there doesn’t seem a more suited location to have a sponsored walk to raise money for Leicester based charity LOROS.

Dental Team from Leicester

LOROS care for around 2,500 terminally ill people across Rutland, Leicester and Leicestershire each year and hold an annual Walk on the Wildside sponsored walking event at Bradgate Park in Leicester. At Smile Essential Dentist we are committed to Patient care and this has earned us a reputation as one of Leicesters Best Dental Clinics. To do this there is a lot of work in the background at the dentist to ensure that we can offer this level of patient dental care consistently. However our work is always rewarded as we get to see a new smile or improve people’s dental anxiety. Patient care is our top priority at Smile Essential Dental Practice.  This is one of the reasons we felt that this year we would raise funds to help LOROS and the amazing patient care they provide to terminally ill people when they most need it.

And raise funds we did! With the help of our Patients, Dental Colleagues and Local Business’s we set about raising a huge £1000 for LOROS and are pleased to say that we have actually raised a massive £1166.58. So a heart felt thank you to everyone that has helped and we hope you enjoy these photos of the dental team from the event.

Kidz Week at the Dentist…

dentist leicesterLets be honest most adults wish that they had looked after their teeth better as a child. And they probably despair when they’re own kids fail to adhere to their tales of wisdom. If you’re a child in Leicester nowadays then the chances are you will have tooth decay. Children in Leicester are the most likely in the whole of the England to have tooth decay.

We are here to help! On Monday 18th August until Thursday 21st August, the dentist will be a great place for kids this summer. From Frozen on the TVs in surgery, fun games, a party bag for all kids that week, competitions to win loom bands! And many more surprises, your kids will be brushing their teeth and ditching the sugar before you know it!

Prevention, Prevention, Prevention. Prevention really is the key to dental decay. Brushing twice a day and limiting sugary foods is a major part in preventing tooth decay. But did you know that your dentist can apply a fluoride varnish to teeth to help better protect them?

You are not alone Getting children to brush their teeth properly can be a battle! We hear all sorts of stories about the length at which some children go to to avoid this including our own! Sometimes a word from the dentist can set them on the straight and narrow, but even then it can take a few check up appointments. Consistency is key.

Not a patient of the practice. We believe coming to the dentist as a family is the best option. There are no charges for children at the dentist and we will see all children whose parents are patients at the practice. Most of our patients are on our membership plan as it’s a really easy way to budget for your dental treatment.

Stop Smoking With Smile Essential Dentist

photo 1-2

As a dental practice you may be surprised to hear that we can now offer you help in stopping smoking. With more people every year getting help to stub out, we are pleased to now be able to refer you to a local stop smoking service.

We all know that smoking is bad for your health and wealth but we recently had some smoking cessation training at the dentist and were surprised to learn a few new things.

‘Smoking thickens your blood and makes it much harder to carry oxygen’

‘Smoking increases the build up of plaque and tartar on the teeth’

‘Every year after the age of 30 that you smoke you take 3 months off of your life’

If you would like help on stopping smoking please discuss it at your next dental health check. Or to find out more please visit- http://www.nhs.uk/smokefree.

National Smile Month

nsm photo whole team

National Smile Month is the UK’s one of the largest oral health campaigns. Together, with other dentists, thousands of individuals, organisations and hopefully our patients too. We will be able to promote 3 key messages, all of which go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth:

  • Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks
  • Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

It is particularly important for the people of Leicester to promote this message for the the children in the county. According to an NHS report, over 50% of children in Leicester have dental decay compared to the national average of 27%. A shocking statistic, I’m sure you’ll agree.

During National Smile Month we have been approached by the Leicester City Council to hold a toothbrush amnesty, because of the shocking figures here in Leicester. All children under the age of 6 qualify and they don’t need to be a patient at Smile Essential. Simply bring in their old tooth brush, complete a short survey and we will exchange for a new toothbrush and toothpaste.
