Dental phobia is something that we come come across frequently at Smile Essential dental practice. One in four people in the UK suffer from dental phobia. If you are brave enough to reach out and take the first step by getting in touch; then we see it as our personal mission to help you continue your journey to become dentally fit (and hopefully a lot less scared!).
If it has been several years since your last dental visit, then you may be holding onto the image of yesteryear. However, modern dentistry has changed significantly and at our Leicester dental clinic, we are proud that our efforts have culminated in achieving Dental Phobia Certification.
There are many reasons people are afraid of the dentist:
- Fear of anaesthesia
- Fear of choking
- Fear of diagnosis
- Fear of the drill
- Fear of embarrassment
- Fear of future dental work
- Fear of needles
- Fear of pain
- Fear of feeling powerless
At Smile Essential dental practice, we take your anxiety seriously. As dentists we understand you may feel embarrassed about your problems, but you need not worry, we are here to help. We are confident that by working together, we can help you to overcome your fears and give you a smile that beams with pride.
Modern dental techniques have advanced a great deal, meaning most treatments are now pain free. All our dentists have ongoing training in pain management and the treatment of anxious patients. We also have a STOP signal, so that if at any time during treatment you feel pain or are uncomfortable, we will stop the treatment and do all we can to help. As the patient, you are always in control.
The dentist and dental assistant are also trained to guide you through the whole process with meditative breathing techniques to help you control your anxiety. Many of our patients find this hugely beneficial. If you’re a nervous patient, you might find it helpful to bring a friend or family member along to your appointment for support and comfort of seeing a familiar friendly face.
Fear of pain is a common dental issue and we routinely use a topical gel or spray for all patients to help prevent any pain. For patients with an extreme dislike of needles, we offer ‘The Wand’. The Wand is a digital method of delivering anaesthetic which prevents the bee-sting pain associated with traditional injections. It ensures anaesthesia is delivered in a controlled, pain-free manner.
It is with the above mentioned tips, technology and compassion that we have earned the right to become Dental Phobia Certified.
